For Black Friday, I’m buying an electric wheelbarrow and I refuse to feel bad. You should also consider one, especially if you have aging parents who enjoy gardening, or if you are the aging person who loves gardening.

I have spent 20 years being proud of the countless number of wheelbarrows I have moved full of dirt, compost, wood chips and wood. But time is not on my side, and this is becoming more and more difficult to do as I approach middle age. This summer, I borrowed a neighbor’s electric wheelbarrow. Surely, if I married the wheelbarrow, I couldn’t be expected to return it, could you? The wheelbarrow didn’t do all the work for me; it gave me gentle support, which meant I was able to do more work without the work ruining my body. Black Friday is a great time to consider machines like this: here are four models I’m reviewing.

Classic wheelbarrow with power

There’s a reason the classic wheelbarrow design works: it can squeeze into tight spaces, it has few parts, and it can be easily emptied. Corners are less of a problem with a wheelbarrow than with a cart, as are turns, which it can do with almost no room. Here are two I would look at.

Electric Utility Cart

Although they don’t have the flexibility of a traditional wheelbarrow, utility carts can support more weight and a larger load. Most of them allow the sides to detach to become a flat cart, and these carts travel forward, instead of towing the rear, which I prefer.
