Sniper Elite: Resistance does its best to justify a return to 1940s France and shows why Rebellion won’t be giving up on World War II anytime soon

I think the highest praise I can give Sniper: Resistance is that once my gaming session was over, I immediately went out and purchased Elite Sniper 5 so I can continue playing. I got caught up in my time with Sniper: Resistance at Gamescomso I was more than happy to recently attend a preview event to return to 1940s France to play what promises to be the first must-play game of 2025.

Last time, I infiltrated a French walled city in broad daylight, requiring me to scale the high city walls before descending into the narrow streets to explode Nazi testicles in gruesome x-ray detail. This time I was sent to a river town in the dead of night to investigate what was happening at a nearby train station and meet the local Resistance cell.

Last time my mission was to scale the high walls and then descend into the city below, whereas this time things started in the meadows outside the city and made your way down there. Unfortunately, the enemy clearly had an idea of our arrival, as there were snipers scattered throughout the city, giving me plenty of time to hone my sniper skills (or lack thereof). skills). Being a night mission and being the stealth master that I am, I absolutely didn’t bottle up the mission and had difficulty crossing the heavily guarded bridge every time I tried.

In France, you’ll be dealing with a lot of cramped streets and alleys, so unless you’re really elite, there are times when you won’t get much sniping done. Instead, my plan revolved around traps, distractions, and backstabbing. Like many immersive stealth simulations, half the fun is playing with the enemies. Whether it’s tying a grenade to a dead Nazi and throwing it in the middle of the road for the next unsuspecting group to take a look, or planting explosives across the city before shooting them to keep the squads away from you. There are a lot of opportunities to play with AI and create that kind of moment that made Hitman: World of Assassination so memorable.

Granted, some may find things a little too familiar for Elite Sniper 5 – especially when it’s the same price. The user interface and mechanics of both games are virtually identical, and while the maps are new, 1940s France still feels like 1940s France. That being said, it’s still a new feature. Elite Sniper campaign to dig (Rebellion claims it is the same size as Elite Sniper 5which lasts about nine missions), so it’s going to be a good time either way. Plus, you play as the series’ British co-op partner Harry Hawker, who has a bit more personality (and swear words, lots of swear words) than Yank’s stoic protagonist Karl Fairburne.

Following the preview session, I had the chance to chat with Sniper: Resistancethe level designer, Beck Shaw. Naturally, the first thing I wanted to know was why this game wasn’t available. Elite Sniper 6 and why Elite Sniper 5 (and by extension, France) was the right choice to present the first non-zombie spin-off of the series. “We have read a lot of positive feedback from Elite Sniper 5and the fans really enjoyed it. We wanted to offer them a little more of the same and just explore more of France.

If the name does not reveal it, French resistance was an important factor in Sniper: Resistance. In Elite Sniper 5Karl does indeed run with the resistance in places, but he mostly does his own thing. But this time, Harry works hand in hand with members of the resistance to obtain information.

While I haven’t personally had a chance to play it, we were briefed on the Propaganda Missions, which are new sub-missions that you can unlock by finding specific collectibles. Shaw let me know that these missions take place in the same locations as the main story, but instead you play as a new member of the resistance in a different time period. These can range from stealth challenges to, of course, sniper challenges, with the intention being to make them replayable to get the best scores. I can’t tell you firsthand what they look like, but based on the description, it’s one of the features I’m most looking forward to.

One of the most common comments from the Elite Sniper the fan base is where every game would take place. While Elite Sniper 3 explored the often overlooked North African theater of World War II, Sniper Elite V2, 4and that Elite Sniper 5 the duology remained firmly anchored in Western Europe (Germany, Italy and France respectively). But surprisingly, the series never aired in Eastern Europe or the Pacific Theater.

I asked why it hadn’t been explored, and if Rebellion was interested in going for it, Shaw told me when the studio was considering a new installment: “We’re exploring all areas of warfare… there’s definitely an interest there, and we definitely hear the community – they’re screaming loud and clear about where they want to go.” However, although France and Germany are popular locations for WWII games, Rebellion doesn’t think it’s scorched earth, with Shaw saying: “We think at the moment there’s a lot of stories that have not been told in the world. Western European region, but that doesn’t mean we will never visit these places in the future.

Considering the series is known for its stealth and punishing gameplay, this explanation made perfect sense, with Shaw concluding his answer by telling me: “WWII was probably like the last time it was just one man with the world in front of him. .” So while the possibility hasn’t been completely ruled out, it’s clear that Rebellion has no plans to abandon the 1940s just yet. “There are a lot of interesting places that aren’t always shown in movies. media about World War II… there are a lot of places we can share and a lot of stories we can tell.”

Elite Sniper continues to carve out a little niche for itself, and even though I’m late to the party, I’m checking Sniper: Resistance converted me and I caught up Elite Sniper 3, 4And 5. It’s been almost three years since the last game, so it’s a bit of a shame that there doesn’t seem to be a big step forward Elite Sniper 5. But at the same time, it’s a pretty awesome game, and if Propaganda’s missions work out, I can see myself being stuck in it for a long time.
