‘Sorry if this tradition bothers you’: City bell ringers hit back after resident complains about late-night chimes

The bell ringers of St Andrew’s Church in Shifnal posted on social media to highlight the problem.

They said the group had received messages from a resident complaining about the chimes from St Andrew’s Church late at night.

The group explained that the chimes come automatically from the clock and are not caused by the bell ringers.

The post has received great support from local residents, who also say the carillons are a much-loved part of town life.

It said: “Following a few messages from a local person in Shifnal, we would just like to explain that the chimes during the night are sounded automatically by the church clock and therefore we cannot influence when they ring.

“We play church bells on Sunday mornings as well as on other occasions, at the request of the church, as well as practicing on Thursday evenings, a tradition which has been in place for many centuries in our little city.

“I’m sorry if that The tradition bothers you, however, we believe the tradition is very important to our church community and we believe it should continue.

The group then quoted poet Alfred Tennyson as saying: “Ring the old, ring the new, Ring, joyful bells, through the snow: The year is passing, let it go; Make the falsehood heard, make the truth heard.

In response to this message, many residents expressed support for the continuation of the chimes, arguing that they are part of the social fabric of Shifnal.

One said: “A sweet reminder of home for many! I love the bells and thank you to everyone who gives up their time to make this happen!”

Another added: “When I came back to Shifnal I was happy to get closer to them as I always loved hearing them.”
