Disney World’s beloved Muppets attraction to close

Big changes are coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World in Florida, as a beloved decades-old attraction closes its doors, while another longtime fan favorite gets a makeover.

Muppet*Vision 3D, which opened in 1991, and the surrounding Muppet Courtyard will close to make way for a previously announced new land themed “Monsters, Inc.” franchise, the company said Friday.

The new area will feature a long-discussed roller coaster based on the safe scene in the first film as well as restaurants and – of course – shopping.

Disney shared concept art for the new area:

The Muppets themselves will remain in the park.

Disney stated that the characters would be “move straight ahead» to what is currently the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster with Aerosmith, a thrill ride that opened in 1999 and still regularly sees wait times of an hour or more.

Aerosmith will be kicked out while the ride will be revamped to feature the Muppets as well as “some of music’s biggest stars.”

Muppet*Vision 3D was one of Muppet creator Jim Henson’s final projects, as he died while it was being made. The film features a mix of a 3D movie with Muppets animatronics and a costumed Muppets character who enters the theater at a key moment.

“Innovation has always been Jim Henson’s North Star, and his pioneering career has led him to a unique challenge: a truly immersive Muppet experience where the audience is part of the joyful chaos of the iconic Muppet Show. » the Jim Henson Company said in a press release responding to the announcement of the closure. “The result was a one-of-a-kind Jim Henson experience and an unforgettable cornerstone of Jim’s magnificent career.”

Henson plays Kermit the Frog, the Swedish chef, and Statler and Waldorf – the Muppets’ relentless hecklers – in the attraction.

A clone of the show ran at Disney’s California Adventure theme park for over a decade and closed in 2014.

Disney has suggested that Muppet*Vision 3D might still survive, well in some form.

“As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future,” said the society.

The Jim Henson Company also hinted at the attraction’s future, saying “we look forward to the next act of Muppet*Vision 3D.”

Disney has not said when Muppet*Vision 3D or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will close, or when the new attractions are expected to open, but has already said construction in the Monsters, Inc. area will begin next year.
