THE Los Angeles Chargers made the most notable hire of the 2024 NFL offseason by hiring Jim Harbaugh as its new head coach.

When he returned to the NFL, Harbaugh had just won a national championship at Michigan. It’s been a decade since San Francisco 49ers fired him after the 2014 NFL season, and he was ready to show that his 44-19-1 record and appearance in Super Bowl 47 was no fluke.

So far, Harbaugh is achieving that goal. He transformed the Chargers from a middling team to a legitimate contender, sporting one of the best defenses in the NFL and an offense in which Justin Herbert is experiencing rapid growth. He’s quickly erased some of the pain from the Brandon Staley era and could be on his way to giving Los Angeles its first playoff victory since 2018.

However, Harbaugh can’t afford to take his foot off the gas. The Chargers face a tough stretch in their schedule, starting with the Week 12 “Harbaugh Bowl” between Jim and his brother John Harbaugh. Baltimore Ravens. Any mistake by Los Angeles could allow the gridlock of wild-card contenders in the AFC to catch up with the Chargers and create chaos in the final weeks of the season.

Here’s what you need to know about the Chargers’ playoff odds, their remaining schedule and where they stand in the AFC playoff picture for Week 12.

Chargers playoff odds

The Chargers are -1,200 odds to make the playoffs heading into Week 12, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. This implied probability gives Los Angeles a 92.31% chance of making the playoffs.

Remaining schedule of chargers

The Chargers’ remaining seven opponents have a combined winning percentage of exactly .500, per Tankathon. That’s tied for 13th toughest remaining schedules among all 32 NFL teams and the New York Giants.

Los Angeles faces a particularly tough stretch between Weeks 12 and 14, in which it will face opponents with a combined record of 22-10. This includes their highly anticipated Week 14 rematch with the Chiefs.

Below is a full overview of the Los Angeles schedule:

AFC West standings

The Chargers are not expected to win their division. Los Angeles has odds of just +750 to beat the AFC West. This gives them an 11.76% chance of overtaking the Chiefs in the race to lead the division.

Below is a complete look at the AFC West standings heading into Week 12:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs (10-1)
  2. Los Angeles Chargers (7-3)
  3. Denver Broncos (6-5)
  4. Las Vegas Raiders (2-8)

The Chargers are currently two games behind the Chiefs in the division race, but lost to them 17-10 in Week 4. That gives Kansas City the tiebreaker advantage over Los Angeles.

The Chargers can retaliate if they beat the Chiefs in their Week 14 game. Even so, Kansas City has a better division record (3-0) than Los Angeles (2-1), so catching the Chiefs is a difficult climb. The Chargers’ first priority should be to put some distance between themselves and the Broncos in the wild-card race.
