The Slumdog Millionaire sequel is in the works: here’s what to expect

A sequel to the 2008 Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire is in the works, with production rights acquired by Bridge7, the newly created banner by producer Swati Shetty and former CAA agent Grant Kessman. Rights to the film sequel and a television adaptation have been secured from Celador, the UK-based production company behind the original hit.

The original filmdirected by Danny Boyle, caused a worldwide sensation, winning eight Oscarsincluding Best Film and Best Director, seven BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globes. AR Rahman’s iconic score, featuring the chart-topping anthem Jai Ho, also won two Academy Awards.

In a statement, Swati Shetty and Grant Kessman highlighted the universal appeal of the film’s narrative:

The original filmwhich marked Dev Patel’s debut as protagonist Jamal, tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who competes in the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” The story struck a chord around the world, resonating with its themes of resilience and destiny.

Slumdog Millionaire: revisiting a global phenomenon

Slumdog Millionaire remains a reference in world cinema. A free adaptation of Novel by Indian author Vikas Swarup Q&A (2005), the film tells the fascinating story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old from the Juhu slums of Mumbai. Starring Dev Patel in his film debut, the film captivated audiences with its blend of drama, destiny and resilience.
