3 dead, 1 seriously injured in Cybertruck crash in California

Three people were killed and one was seriously injured when their Tesla Cybertruck crashed in Piedmont, California, police say.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday, police received a collision alert from an iPhone, which provided them with the location of the crash, according to Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers. Shortly afterward, someone called 911 to report an accident.

“Officers arrived on scene to find a single vehicle collision fully engulfed in flames,” Bowers said at a news conference Wednesday.

Another motorist was able to remove a person from the Cybertruck, Bowers said.

Officers attempted to put out the flames, but the fire was too intense for extinguishers to be effective, police said.

Piedmont firefighters responded and were eventually able to put out the flames, according to Bowers.

Police believe it is possible that those involved in the crash attended a function together before the incident.

There is no evidence that a mechanical problem with the electric truck caused the crash, police said.

Police said they would not release information on the identities of those killed in the Cybertruck at this time.

Speed was a factor in the collision, but other factors likely contributed to the fatal crash, Bowers said.

The Piedmont Police Department is investigating with the California Highway Patrol.
