AUGUSTA, Ga. – Veterans Day, which commemorates Americans who have served in the military, is observed annually on November 11.

Although it honors all veterans, it originated on Armistice Day, which marks the end of the First World War. The main hostilities of World War I officially ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

In the United States, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
