Tweed secures $4 million grant for terminal expansion

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – A New Haven airport has announced a federal grant to support the second phase of a terminal expansion.

Tweed-New Haven Airport said Thursday the $4 million from the Federal Aviation Administration will go toward its new 81,568-square-foot terminal that includes four gates, expanded security screening, new passenger processing systems luggage and concession area.

The money is part of the FAA’s fiscal 2025 airport terminal program, the airport said.

Tweed said he was trying to replace and modernize the outdated terminal, built in 1931.

The new terminal will increase the airport’s capacity and significantly improve the passenger experience.

“This grant is another big win for (Tweed-New Haven Airport) and the southern Connecticut region,” said Michael Jones, CEO of The New HVN. “Once built, HVN’s new terminal will transform the way we serve our passengers and support our community, offering modern amenities, a more efficient security process and sustainable infrastructure. We are deeply grateful to the FAA and Connecticut’s federal delegation for their continued investment in HVN’s growth and success.

This $4 million grant is part of a larger effort to make long-needed improvements to Tweed-New Haven Airport and position the airport to play a key role in future growth of Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure, the airport said.
